Designation Approach Length Curcuit
03   from South   5,000 ft   Left Hand
12   from West   2,500 ft   Right Hand
21   from North   5,000 ft   Right Hand
30   from East   2,500 ft   Right Hand

Runway 30 can be subjet to severe wind gradients. In gusty westerly conditions the rotor can dump on the main ridge (Jury Hill) causing a wind direction reversal from 20 kts west to 20 kts east in a matter of minutes. Keep a close watch on the wind socks.

Joining Circuit   Do not join overhead. The airfield is a glider winch launch site. Gliders can be launched to 4,500 ft before releasing the launch cable which can take several minutes to reach the ground again.

Glider Pilots   Visiting glider pilots wishing to land at Papawai should announce their intentions to 'Jury Hill Traffic' on 134.45 MHz and join the appropriate circuit.

Power Pilots

Visiting power pilots wishing to land at Papawai who are unfamiliar with the airfield layout should let down and commence a left hand orbit in the vicinity of the State Highway 2 bridge over the Waiohine river one mile north of Greytown. Follow the Waiohine river on a SE heading to the airfield.

Contact 'Jury Hill Base' on 134.45 MHz and state your intentions. If the airfield is in use the duty pilot or winch operator will advise if or when the runway is clear to land. If the airfield is unattended and no flying operations are taking place, power pilots should make a low pass before landing. Power pilots should not attempt to land or do a low pass if there is livestock on the runways.

Pilots transiting through the Wairarapa in the vicinity of the Papawai airstrip should not fly directly over the strip, unless they are above 3,500 feet and well clear of any gliders undertaking a winch launch.
